Power of Kids
By Trish Reda
My whole life I have been fascinated with portrait photography. I love faces and I especially love the faces of children. My style took a very evident turn upon the birth of my daughter. Nothing has humbled me more than motherhood. From the moment she was born, she looked at me as if she knew what was going on. Nobody has taught me more than my now 3 year old Gracie.
If I had any message in my photography it would be that children have inherently in them something to contribute to the world now. I believe that this is often overlooked by us. I dont think its our fault, really, we all do it innocently. I do think, though, that we grown-ups tend to get so caught up in the cuteness of our children that we underestimate them. We often pat them on the head condescendingly and disregard what they have to say. This infuriated me as a child, yet I hate to admit that I have caught myself doing it on more than one occasion.
Memories from my own childhood guide my approach to photography. I wanted to be taken seriously and remember the frustration of not being so. I truly believe that beyond the evident cuteness of kids; there is so much more to them. There is power, wisdom, and dignity in its best and purest form. I strive to show these qualities in my photographs without completely letting go of the cute factor.
